Rare Orrefors Lindstrand Man and Accordion Engraved Vase

$449.00

This engraved accordion player is a rare* piece, designed and produced in 1936 at Orrefors Glasbruk in Sweden. The artist, Vicke Lindstrand, drew the stylized Art Deco man, and the master, Karl Rössler, engraved the design. The image is copper-wheel engraved on a hand blown lead crystal vase. Style number 1568 means it was designed in 1936, and the date code A2 means that this particular vase was made the same year. The overall condition is very good; it has scratches on its base, as expected of a piece this old. The vase is about 10 inches tall and 4 inches across, and it weighs nearly 4 pounds.

This vase was on the cutting edge of a new design movement in Sweden in the early 20th century. In place of the traditional filigree and flourishes that filled engraved glass from earlier artists, Lindstrand employed powerful central figures, filling the vase with human and animal subjects. Lindstrand, like Simon Gate and Edward Hald who preceded him, designed detailed images that engravers recreated on glass, using only the depth and texture of the carving as a palette. Truly remarkable. I hope this vase finds a new home with someone who can appreciate its timeless beauty, its rich history, and its notable creators.
