Sven Palmqvist designed this large crystal vase for Orrefors Glassworks in Sweden. The image of the androgynous naked person is copper-wheel engraved by hand. This is a very large vase, 6 inches across and almost 10 inches tall, and it's heavy, weighing nearly six pounds. The design code 2072 tells me it was designed in 1939; the date and engraver codes aren't readable.
The vase has had quite a life in its 85-year history, and it bears many small scratches, especially on the base. There is one shallow chip on a corner of the back edge of the base which, for my collection, I covered with a clear, removable finish.* It is hardly visible, and it's smooth to the touch. (see circled part of one photo)
Orrefors employed master artists and craftsmen, some of whom worked their whole careers of 40, 50, or more years with the company. Sven Palmqvist (1906-1984) was born in the glass district of southern Sweden and started his career with Orrefors in 1928, where he remained until 1972. In those years, he designed hundreds of engraved glass motifs.
*The finish is a nail lacquer, which I applied it before I displayed it in my home. If you prefer, it can be removed with acetone-based nail polish remover.
