Orrefors Lindstrand 1936 Design, Nude With Dove Engraved Crystal Vase, Called Peace

$299.00

This vase is very special. It was designed by Vicke Lindstrand (1904-1983) at Orrefors in Sweden, in 1936, as . Lindstrand named this vase, "Peace," and he later designed the front view of the woman, too. The pair appeared separately at first, with the view from the back numbered 1647, and the view from the front numbered 1871. (so, a 1937 design) In 1941, after Lindstrand had left Orrefors, the pair appeared together in catalog 16, listed as 2015 and 2016. This vase is 2015.

As you can see, it has a very heavy base, and it weighs about 6 pounds. It is 10.5 inches tall, about 4 inches in diameter at its widest point, and 2 inches across the mouth. It is in fabulous condition, with only a few small scratches and no clouding. There is significant wear on the base, so the production date code and engraver initials are nearly impossible to read. My best guess for engraver is AR – Arthur Roos, who worked at Orrefors from 1924 to 1974, and that means the production of this particular example could be anywhere from 1941 to 1974.

Lindstrand was born in Goteborg, Sweden, and started his career with Orrefors in 1928, remaining there until 1940. Between 1943 and 1950 he became creative leader at Uppsala Ekeby, where he designed many different stoneware objects ranging from pots to figural sculptures. In 1950 he joined Kosta Glasbruk as an artistic director. He was the dominant designer until his retirement in 1973, lending his name to many now-classic designs. As a glass designer, textile and ceramic designer, and painter, he is considered a pioneer of Swedish art. (He is also my favorite Swedish artist, and the one whose work I collect most.)

I hope this vase finds a new home with someone who can appreciate its timeless beauty and its rich history. If you have questions I haven't answered, please don't hesitate to ask.
