This beautiful, copper-wheel engraved crystal vase was made in Bavaria, in an area in the eastern part of Germany. It is a heavy piece, weighing almost 2.5 pounds and standing 7 inches tall. Its oval profile is 4 inches by 2.5 inches at its widest point. It is in excellent condition - it looks brand new!
Not knowing much about Bavarian glass, I contacted the company directly, and this is what I learned:
"The vase was made from lead crystal in the JOSKA glassworks in Bodenmais in the mid-1990s and engraved in our engraving department. The manufacture of this hand-engraved vase was discontinued 15 years ago. So this vase is no longer for sale. The name of the series was simply 'Wedding Couple.'
The two engravers were Franz Straub and Josef Peschl, who designed and produced this motif. Franz Straub has been working in his own company for a long time and Josef Peschl still works at JOSKA. The vase takes about 90 minutes to engrave.
JOSKA Kristall was founded at the end of 1960 by Josef Kagerbauer, Senior, as a one-man business in Bodenmais. The company name JOSKA comes from the initial abbreviations of the name of the founder. Today the core business is glass production and refinement, plus the “glass paradise,” which is an adventure world with many attractions. Here, customers can see every step of the glass production, from the glass furnace to the finishing.
