This charming Swedish art glass vase was designed by Vicke Lindstrand before he left Orrefors in 1940. This copy was made in the early 1950s at Orrefors. Its design closely follows an earlier Vicke Lindstrand design, and it is a lovely size for an accent piece, measuring 4" x 4" x 7" and weighing 2.5 pounds. The pleasing square form is decorated with the much-loved title character from The Wonderful Adventures of Nils, a work of fiction by the Swedish writer Selma Lagerlöf. The story was originally published in two books, 1906 and 1907, and was first published in English as The Wonderful Adventures of Nils in 1907 and Further Adventures of Nils in 1911. As an interesting side-note, I've included a photo of the detail of a 1935 painting of the title character, by Sven Erixson.
The signing reads, "Orrefors. L. 2387. C3. P." That "L" would designate Lindstrand as designer. The vase was made in 1955 (code C3). There is a small chipped area along the base, as shown in the photos.
